When entering placenames, it is advisable to follow the current spelling. It is also good practice to always have the placename followed by the province/region/county/state indication and, if necessary, the name of the country. For this indication you could use the standardized geocodes, omitting the country-part.

Wikipedia is a good source of information about the spelling of placenames and the province classification.
Behind the place field is a button with which you can look up the place in Google Maps. This allows you to check if the placename is recognized.
